Keyword Research
Build the foundation for your SEO campaign
What is Keyword Research?
Keyword research is the process of determining what search terms will yield the best results as the focus of a Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) campaign.
The research process will identify the ideal keywords and keyphrases and then explore all similar alternatives. For each option it will ask three key questions:
- How many people are searching with this search term?
- Will it be difficult to rank for this search term?
- How relevant to the page content is this search term?
Why is Keyword Research important?
Keyword research is the foundation of any SEO campaign. If you are looking to gain more organic traffic to your site, then you need to focus your efforts to achieve the best results. You need to be realistic about what is achievable and choose search terms that are not only within your reach, but will also produce the results you need. This research process will do exactly this.
Targeting short keyphrases may seem like a good idea. For example a keyphrase like 'Insurance Brokers' may seem ideal for your company, given that tens of thousands of people use this search term in the UK each month. However, the competition for this search term would be tough and you would likely need a very large budget to create the sort of content needed to contend for the top spots.
However, after carrying out your keyword research, you might choose to target a longer, more specific keyphrase, such as 'Independent Car Insurance Brokers'. There may only be a few hundred people searching for it each month, but this could be enough for your company and would be much easier to get a good search engine rank for.
